Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI)

The Istituto Affari Internazionali is a non-profit organisation and research centre established in 1965 by Altiero Spinelli. Its main objective is to promote an understanding of the underlying trends and issues of international politics through studies, research, symposia and publications. It focuses on the following areas: Institutions and Policies of the European Union, the EU and its Neighbourhood, Italy’s Foreign Policy, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Transatlantic Relations, Security and Defence, and International Political Economy. Two research departments come together for the Sharaka project: the Mediterranean and Middle East programme, a well-established programme at IAI, dating back to its foundation, and the European Union and its Neighbourhood programme, a rapidly growing department focusing specifically on the EU and its response to the numerous changes in the surrounding regions.
